Charles Sheeler is considered one of the founders of American Modernism and one of the master photographers of the 20th century. He traveled to Paris after finishing school and experienced the Cubism movement, which made him realize when he returned to America that his Modernist paintings would not be able to support him, so he took up commercial photography. He taught himself everything he knew about photography, and all on a $5 Brownie, which was a popular, cheap Kodak camera introduced in early 1900. He was a self-proclaimed precisionist, with his works are largely focused around architectural structures and his painting techniques largely complimented his photography.
